Overview & Reviews
A 5.9-liter V8 making 245 horsepower and 345 pound-feet torque powers the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, making it the mightiest of all Jeeps. With the addition of the 5.9, the putrid Orvis model dies. Two new colors and "next-generation" airbags round out the changes.
- Lightweight unibody construction, excellent on and off-road manners, optional V-8, standard ABS, dual airbags, lots of standard equipment
- Spare tire hogs cargo area, engines hog gas, not as roomy inside as some competitors, price climbs rapidly as options are added

Too many hassles... - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By MichaelBman - May 30 - 10:00 amJeeps are cool cars, dont get me wrong. However, I have had so many things go wrong with mine that I will not buy another one. The dealer guaranteed the car, but acted as if I was an idiot when I told them to fix certain things. I have had 3 bearings go bad ($300 a piece), A/C break, and many other things to give me a headache in the 2+ years Ive owned it. Good looking car, but a nightmare to upkeep.

My so-so Jeep Cherokee - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By SassyOne - May 21 - 10:00 amIve had my Jeep for over a year now, bought it with about 46,000 miles on it. Ive had to replace my sway bar links, had to have a my exhaust manifold fixed, seal on the sunroof, replaced the drivers seat (heater didnt work) and have had to replace several speakers twice. Poor speakers for the quality of the stereo. Now while driving if I hit a bump the wrong way, my steering wheel goes crazy and I have to hold on for dear life until it decides to stop, havent figured out what this problem is but I hope soon otherwise I may end up in a ditch because you cant stop the SUV while the steering wheel is shaking uncontrolably.

Fun to Drive! - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By jcooperdj - May 12 - 9:33 pmI bought this off a good friend who drove it on the highway alot with 112,00 now 18 months later it has 122,000. Really no repairs have been done and it just started on its 3rd set of tires. Seal between transfer case and tranny replaced. Door speakers are junk I have replaced all 4 but the rest rocks! NOISY on the highway from either tires or differential.

Expensive Junk - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Lemonade - April 2 - 10:00 amIm one of the few that use this car offroad fairly regularly for surveying. Bought the car with just 11k miles on it, and have only managed to put another 40k on in 4 years. Why? Because I cant keep it running. Various suspension, electrical, and brake problems keep popping up. Got the 5.9 because I needed to pull a trailer, and fuel economy is predictably bad at around 12MPG. There is just no reason why a 6 year old car with just 51k miles should rack up nearly $7,000 in repairs.

Limited 5.9 Still a BEAST - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By princeofpeace - March 23 - 8:16 amWe bought this as a step up in a second car. It quickly became our favorite. From 0-100 it takes just 16 seconds! Stops from 100 m.p.h. in a amazing 126ft. This is a 1/4 mile high 14s Jeep! Bone stock,179K miles still idles at 600rpm smooth as glass. Stomping on the gas lurches you forward without any tire spin just flat out acceleration. Gets 15m.p.g. overall a stout 18@ 65mph for any length. The interior is laid out perfect! Cruise and radio/CD control on the steering wheel.Climate control that really works! Slick leather seats in dove Grey.Leather and wood everywhere! Faster than 5.0s n Vettes in the 1990s! Still shocks kids at red light jumps. Only in a Jeep!

No Complaints - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Mark_NH - March 14 - 10:00 amI just wanted to chime in and offer up my experience with my 98 JGC Limited (5.2L, V8). No problems to speak of. Of those issues I had they were parts which normally wear over time (water pump, brakes, viscous coupler). These vehicles are rock solid with reagrd to structure, excellent attention to detail with interior features.

Comfortable P.O.S. - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Jon Levy - February 23 - 10:00 amGood looking car, very comfortable, wouldnt bet my holey shirt on its reliability. Im now riding on a back of a motorcyle, waiting for a new transmission to be put in, ouch. Ive paid more in problems associated with everyday driving than I will for the downpayment of the Audi Allroad Im about to pick up. I want to like the jeep, but it keeps breaking down and falling apart! AHHHHHHH!!!!

Grand Cherokee not for me! - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By wildman - February 19 - 10:00 amBuyers beware of problems with drivetrain. Transmission hesitates in reverse, and suddenly upshifts/downshifts from 2nd to 3rd (always has since 45000 miles). Also, bearings in differential are prone to go bad - apparently this is a common problem according to local dealer - manufacturing tolerances were too tight. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone. Chrysler really should do something about their problematic transmissions. I hate to say this, since I enjoyed the Wrangler that I previously owned, but it had a manual tranny, instead of automatic. Im now lookind at Toyota 4runners, based on their good history.

Best Year - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Dale - February 7 - 4:47 amThe style and reliability are the best in the market. You must get the 4.0 and you should get 500 Thousand miles plus. The real reason they quit making the 4.0 was it will not die..Updated 12/16. Still driving it. Will not die so I put New Tires on it and probably couldnt get a New one this reliable.

Overall Good Car - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By GDenton - January 11 - 10:00 amI bought this car for my son and I have had almost no problems with it. We bought the car when it had 87K miles on it and have only had minor wheel alignment problems. It gets great gas mileage for its size; 34 mi/ gal. I think this car is worth looking into.
